The women of Rolling Loud Miami are proof of progress

Music festivals usually fail to feature women prominently, but we’ve got a playlist to celebrate Rolling Loud’s line-up and properly get you pumped.

Earlier this year, Los Angeles’ FYF Fest was applauded for making a stride in territory that should have long been trampled: its 2018 line-up was headlined by only women. And not just one, but two. It was a noted detour from music festivals around the country that tend to treat gender equality like the plague (as proven by Pitchfork, who last year found that of the 996 acts playing across 23 fests, only 14-percent were female).

It was so strong a headline that FYF artist booker Jenn Yacoubian found herself publicly praying that the women-led roster wouldn’t deter ticketbuyers, telling Refinery29, “Geez, I hope that this is not the mindset, or we are all f**ked on multiple levels. Ticket sales are always on every promoter’s mind, but we never felt that a strong female representation on the lineup would ever impact us negatively sales-wise.”

And yet, this week it was announced that FYF was cancelled due to low ticket sales, a somewhat-surprise considering a more evenly divvied line-up is desired by both artists—as singer Halsey demanded that Delaware’s Firefly Festival “do better” upon the unveiling of its list back in January—and fans alike, like those who voiced “complaints” over the lack of females on Rolling Loud Miami’s roster the last two years.

But this year, for its 2018 installment in Miami, the hip-hop festival has delivered in making it fair game for the females. Over three days, fans will get to see Trina, Princess Nokia, Molly Brazy, Rico Nasty, Cuban Doll, Dreezy, Cupcakke, Saweetie, Kodie Shane, Wolftyla, and Bali Baby hit the stage to represent for not just women in hip-hop, but simply hip-hop.
