Touted as the Oscars of fashion, the Met Gala is always the talk of the town. Last night’s (May 8) spectacle was no different. A large part of the conversation surrounding the annual event happened to be all of the Black Excellence displayed, from the red carpet to the infamous after party. As expected, the cast of the record-breaking Black Panther film showed up and showed out. Attendees included Chadwick Boseman, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya and Michael B. Jordan, who discussed his role as Erik Killmonger in the massively successful film with The Breakfast Club this morning. “I think he won. I think he got his point across in the end,” said the Hollywood A-lister. “You see T’Challa actually go back to Oakland, buy the buildings and really open the borders of Wakanda, so that was Killmonger’s victory.” Also covered during his chat with Angela Yee, Charlamagne tha God and DJ Envy was how a doctor’s visit jump-started his career.

On being discovered at a doctor’s visit: “When I was 11 years old, I was sitting in the waiting room and my mom came out and the receptionist was like, “You should get your son into modeling.” I started out modeling for Toys”R”Us and Modells.”

On how his life has changed since Black Panther: “It’s insane. Kind of known before. I guess now, it’s just I can’t go anywhere. Malls are off limits.”

“It’s incredible, especially with the kids and seeing the next generation and how excited they’ve been after seeing the movie and their reaction to me walking around has been.”

On Killmonger’s “Death is better than bondage” line: “That was Ryan. Yeah, Ryan Coogler is incredible, man. We just wanted to really get the essence of what Killmonger was trying to say, and going in chains trying to live wasn’t really on his agenda. He was willing to die for what he believed in.”

On Killmonger’s victory in the end “I think he won. I think he got his point across in the end. You see T’Challa actually go back to Oakland, buy the buildings and really open the borders of Wakanda, so that was Killmonger’s victory.”

On doing Creed II without Ryan Coogler as director “In the beginning I was a little hesitant, honestly. It was something that we started, we created. But he came on board and he’s producing it as well, so he still has his finger prints on it. He’s still involved, but in the beginning, yeah there was a little hesitation.”

On wanting to take on an out-of-shape role “I can’t wait. I can’t wait to just sit. I have to do it soon, because the older you get the harder it is to get back into shape. But I really can’t wait to play a role where I have to put on a lot of weight, I could just eat, not do nothing, not work out – it’ll be awesome.”
