The music community suffered a grave loss yesterday (April 20) with news breaking that famed Swedish DJ and producer Avicii has passed.

With celebrities such as Questlove, Calvin Harris, Atrak and more reacting to the heartbreaking loss on social media, Kygo decided to pay homage to the late EDM pioneer in his headlining Coachella set, hours after learning of the tragedy.

After Miguel and Ariana Grande made surprise guest appearances, with the latter debuting live her new single “No Tears Left to Cry,” Kygo took a moment to address the festival crowd and reflect on the loss of his friend, who was only 28 at the time of his death.

“Coachella, I think most of you guys have heard, but today is a very sad day for music,” Kygo said, per Entertainment Tonight. “Earlier today I got the news that Avicii passed away [at] only 28 years old. Avicii was my biggest musical inspiration and he was the reason I started making electronic music so I don’t think I would’ve been on this stage tonight if it wasn’t for him. I know he’s inspired millions of other producers out there. So I want to end my set tonight with my favorite Avicii song.”

The song in question, “Without You,” was accompanied by portraits of Avicii appearing on the LED monitors behind him, making for a beautiful homage and fitting way to close the night.
