Kanye West reveals plans for philosophy book, talks design with Axel Vervoordt

Kanye West is no stranger to flipping his own script, and this time around, he’s writing his own, too.

As revealed during a recent interview published by The Hollywood Reporter, the beloved rapper is working with words in an entirely new way: he’s working on a philosophy book.

During the conversation, which was arranged in an artful and interesting fashion of having ‘Ye interview his creative collaborator, interior designer Axel Vervoordt, West reveals the inspiration behind the book and even shares a tentative title.

“I’m writing a philosophy book right now called Break the Simulation,” he begins. “And I’ve got this philosophy — or let’s say it’s just a concept because sometimes philosophy sounds too heavy-handed. I’ve got a concept about photographs, and I’m on the fence about photographs — about human beings being obsessed with photographs — because it takes you out of the now and transports you into the past or transports you into the future. It can be used to document, but a lot of times it overtakes [people]. People dwell too much in the memories. People always wanna hear the history of something, which is important, but I think it there’s too much of an importance put on history.”

West then uses an example of how fashion specifically influences his thinking, noting how designers will reference something from the 1920s or 1950s while creating new looks and how history impacts their design/creative process. ‘Ye discussing his plans for the upcoming book stemmed from the pair talking about whether or not Verdoordt would like to live in a different time period, which is a prompt in and of itself that is guaranteed to result in interesting revelations.

Elsewhere throughout the conversation, West talks about Virgil Abloh going to Louis Vuitton, his future goals for his Yeezy line and how he and the acclaimed designer first crossed paths.
