While communities across the United States continue to react to the fatal shooting of Stephon Clark, who was killed by police while standing in his grandparents’ backyard despite being unarmed, the Sacramento police department has since released video footage of the incident.

Per the footage, an officer can be heard yelling, “Show me your hands! Gun, gun, gun!” prior to the scene erupting in gunfire. After the shooting ends, one officer can be heard saying, “He’s down.”

As reported, the (still unnamed) officers involved in the shooting claim that Clark, a 22-year-old Black man, was pointing a gun at them, causing them to react by firing a total of 20 rounds in his direction. No gun was found at the scene near Clark’s body; only his cell phone was recovered.

“The Sacramento Police Department recognizes the significance of this incident and the impact it has on our community,” the department wrote on Facebook Wednesday (March 21). “We are committed to providing timely information and communicating openly with our community.”

In addition to releasing footage from body cams worn by the two responding officers, and from the helicopter that hovered above the scene, the police department also shared the original 911 call which described a man breaking into car windows and led to the fatal encounter.

Police also stated that more audio and video footage would be released “in the near future.”

Communities across the nation and activists continue to condemn the shooting and the officers who were involved. As reported, a candlelight vigil has been planned to honor Clark’s memory and will take place Friday evening (March 22), near where the tragic shooting took place.
