REVOLT TV caught up with two of today’s powerhouses, luxury fashion designer LaQuan Smith and Colombian-American singer-songwriter Kali Uchis, to have them reveal how their passion for both fashion and music has helped cultivate their leader status.

For 29-year-old Smith, a self-educated success who’s been making major strides since debuting at Fashion Week 2010, the sky is the limit when it comes to designing pieces that accentuate everything—including your true, authentic self.

“When it comes to clothing, when it comes to my aesthetic, I’m really inspired by nightlife, but I think the ultimate inspiration for me is women,” Smith said. “Women that are powerful, women that are dynamic in their own way.”

And that’s apparent in Smith’s clientele: Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Cardi B, and others. Maybe it’s what attracts him that attracts them: “Being an individual and not worrying so much about trends or what other people are doing,” Smith explained.

For Uchis, who’s also a record producer, music video director, and fashion designer, simply being herself, regardless of any outside noise, has proven to work for the 23-year-old.

She’s not only inspired by powerful women, but women who are fearless, strong, and have stories to tell. Considering her tenacity to establish herself, Uchis can relate to those types of women.

“When you’re talented you’re talented, and when you have a passion for something and you work hard at it and develop your skill, that’s what really matters,” Uchis said.

Creating an identity while pushing boundaries is a method that both these architects of culture stand by.

“If it’s not iconic, why do it?” asked Uchis.

“I love what I do; as stressful as it is, I probably won’t be doing anything else,” said Smith.

For these two creators, not only is making meaningful content a goal, but trusting the journey to greatness is essential to strive in this industry.
