While the fight to free Meek Mill continues, Philadelphia social justice leaders are working to best inform both the rapper’s fans and the country at large with updates regarding his ongoing legal battle, as well as to shine a light on the widespread issues plaguing our criminal justice system.

As reported, a handful of student-led organizations from the University of Pennsylvania (Beyond Arrests: Re-Think Systematic-Oppression, Philadelphia Bail Fund), Temple University (Temple Association of Black Journalists, Hosting Our Own Talks) and Drexel University (NAACP Drexel Chapter, Entertainment and Arts Society) are coming together to host a formal nationwide discussion. The panels will focus on Meek’s legal situation specifically, as well as will address why social reform is desperately needed through examining topics such as systemic racism and mass incarceration.

Additionally, during the public forum, Meek’s mother, Kathy Williams, and his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, will provide a highly anticipated update on the case. Recently, it was publicized that his original arresting officer, Reginald Graham, has been outed as being a subject on the District Attorney’s list of corrupt cops in the city.

The Reverend Al Sharpton, who paid a visit to Meek Mill last year, is also scheduled to speak alongside a variety of other community leaders, including Equal Justice Initiative executive director Bryan Stevenson, hip-hop artist Mysonne, Justice League founding member Angelo Pinto, UPenn professor Marie Gottschall, civil rights attorney David Rudofsky and Frontline Dads executive director Reuben Jones, among others.

The talk, which has been titled REFORM: Bringing Injustice to Light, will take place at Philadelphia’s Irvine Auditorium on March 13 at 4pm ET and will also be streamed live via TIDAL.
