Moviegoers who loved Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o in Black Panther will get another dose of black girl magic later, with the two women working together to bring an award-winning novel to the small screen.
Several years ago, Nyong’o acquired the rights to Americanah, a 2013 novel by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She will executive produce and star as the main character Ifemelu, a young Nigerian woman who emigrates to the United States to attend university. But Gurira was brought on as a writer to the project – and according to reports by Extra, she will co-executive produce the miniseries with Nyong’o.
The miniseries will be the third collaboration between Gurira and Nyong’o. They haven’t only worked together in Black Panther, but in the play Eclipsed, which Gurira wrote and Nyong’o starred in for her first Tony Award nomination.
Americanah was a national bestseller and won the 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award. Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is also known for multiple TED talks, including one that was famously sampled in the Beyoncé song “Flawless.”
