With four nominations from the upcoming 2018 Global Spin Awards, it’s clear that Metro Boomin was one of last year’s consummate and consistently triumphant DJs. Here, we look back at yet another one of his successful streaks.
Cruising into 2017 on a wave of hits from 2016, Metro Boomin amped up the hit-making and made it difficult to not want some more of the sonics he helped craft. The same year that hip-hop was certified as music’s most dominant genre, he solidified himself as one of rap music’s most ubiquitous producers. He had so much sauce that his signature tag-lines were lit enough to activate the turn-up by themselves.
Future’s “Mask Off” got love from the trappers and meme-rs. “Bounce Back,” the lead single off Big Sean’s platinum I Decided., was up for a Grammy Award. Gucci Mane’s second platinum trophy as a leading artist came courtesy of “I Get the Bag.” And, off the strength of “Bank Account,” 21 Savage locked in his first bonafide hit.

A legit contender for Hip-Hop’s Most Prolific Beatmaker, Metro saw his Midas Touch extend further beyond just successful singles. He dropped a couple of full-length collaborative albums like Without Warning with Offset and 21 Savage and Double or Nothing with Big Sean, and a few mixtapes too, like Gucci Mane’s Droptopwop and the Perfect Timing project with Nav.
Through a partnership with Republic Records, Young Metro even launched his own imprint, Boominati Worldwide. The newly-established label’s first release was Boomin’s single, the Drake and Offset-assisted “No Complaints.”
Still, the “Bad & Boujee” producer publicly warned emerging beat-makers about the vultures of the music business: “PSA to producers everywhere, don’t let @AtlanticRecords steal your soul,” read a tweet sent by Boomin. His rant on the topic sparked an online discussion that saw the likes of Mike WiLL Made-It, London on da Track and others chiming in.
Due to the political, racial and socio-economic climates America is currently faced with, it’s clear that artists, athletes and other entertainers are becoming increasingly more comfortable taking a public stance on issues that matter to them. And Boomin did so again when he hosted a Trump protest concert.
He’s already locked in production credits on one of 2018’s most anticipated albums, Migos’ Culture II. It’s also expected that MadeInBoomin, his joint effort with MadeInTYO, will drop soon.
Metro Boomin seems fully prepared to follow up strong with another year of No.1 records, platinum and gold plaques, and boss moves.
