Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods album arrived this morning and finds the singer blending hip-hop, R&B, soul, pop, and even country as the genre’s rising singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton guests on “Say Something,” the LP’s latest single.

We spoke to the track’s co-producer Danja about its meaning.

“‘Say Something,’ I can say it is on time,” Danja told REVOLT TV. “How it’s gonna feel and what it’s saying is on time and very relevant to the world in a lot of different ways. So it’s a very necessary piece of music.”

Speaking about the construction of the record, Danja said, “I played off the energy of C.S. [He] came in and [he] is a walking, talking piece of music. He picked up his guitar and played off of that. It’s combining what me and Timbaland [do] and…what C.S. does and this whole other thing, then Justin coming in and producing it and orchestrating it. He turned into a madman with the record. [Justin] was so in a zone with how he wanted to feel, how he wanted things to go, where he wanted the melodies to land. We was really following Justin’s direction.”

Danja also took part in helming “Sauce,” which he says “definitely has energy.”

“That’s why it’s at the top of the project. It has energy. It feels good coming behind ‘Filthy’ or one of the other records mentioned at the top of the list. It belongs up there energy-wise. I really wanted to capture the essence of Memphis, [Justin’s] energy, his swag and the story he wanted to tell musically.”
