The 60th Grammy Awards this year seemed like a perfect time for Jay-Z to go home with hardware. His 13th studio album 4:44 was acclaimed as one of his best, he had a roaring eight nominations for his work (including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year), and the Grammy Award show was in his stomping grounds of New York City.

But somehow, Jay went home empty-handed. He received the President’s Merit Award at a pre-Grammys gala the night before, but Grammys viewers didn’t see that – they only saw Jay’s face pop up several times throughout the night, without a single chance to grace the stage to accept an award. This seemed like the year that hip-hop would be represented perfectly, but the GOAT didn’t get any awards tonight – and his fans weren’t hearing it.
