“I got nominated for ‘All The Way Up’ last year,” French explained recently in New York. “‘All the Way Up’ wasn’t half of what ‘Unforgettable’ is. Yeah, ‘All The Way Up,’ we went double platinum. ‘Unforgettable’ is 20 million platinum. Two billion streams. We done opens up hospitals in Uganda. First video ever, we showed creativity, but we did that for art. We didn’t do that for the Grammy. Nominated or not nominated, it’s not a big deal. All that means is that next year we gotta come harder. You heard what Big Pun said.”
French just released the next video off his 2017 Jungle Rules LP for the track “Famous,” and later in 2018, he plans on releasing a self-produced project.
“I come from Africa, I lived there for 13 years,” French began explaining. “My sound was never a sound that was in-the-box. It was never a sound like one thing. My sound was always a worldwide ear. And, of course, I just go with the vibe. I go wit the new sounds, the old sounds. Whatever catch my soul. I just follow that vibration. With this joint, I’m producing it. I’m producing the beats. I’m doing everything. This joint gonna be a new process for me.”
French may not be the first name you think of when it comes to making tracks, but he’s always heavily involved in his own production and has even found success working for others.
“From the start, from ‘Shot Caller,’ That was me that found the samples,” he explained of his production prowess. “Even last year, we got nominated for a Grammy for the joint I produced for Kanye, the ‘All Day’ joint. I don’t be standing up there pounding my chest, but this one,I’m about to produce the entire joint. It’ll be a nice little project.”
