Rapsody is having her moment. The Roc girl’s most recent album Laila’s Wisdom, featuring Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes and others, is contending for both Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song at this weekend’s Grammy ceremony. In town for the Grammy festivities, Rap pulled up to The Breakfast Club. As expected, she spoke on her experiences as a newly-nominated artist. “I just sat up and I thought about it. I was good. I took my first phone call from Law at Roc Nation, and then he started talking that talk. Then the tears started coming,” she said. She also touched on JAY-Z’s reaction to her sophomore album, striving for greatness and linking with Remy Ma.
On her reaction to her Grammy nominatio:n “I was in LA for the second day of the tour. It was 5:30 in the morning. I’ll never forget. 9th was the first text I saw. It said congratulations.”
“If someone like me can compete at the level of Kendrick or Jay that makes everybody see it’s not just about a name.”
On JAY-Z’s response to Laila’s Wisdom : “The first time I sent it – it was maybe a month before – I sent him a download link. To this day, I didn’t know if he listened or not. I was thinking maybe he’s busy or something. The email he congratulated me on the Grammys for was a reply to that email [laughs]. He listened to it though. When I saw him he told me how much he loved it and that he was proud of what we were doing.”
On wanting to work with Remy Ma: “She hit me last night. We talked. I told her however I can support, just hit me. We can do way more together than we can apart.”
