Life after the NBA has kept Baron Davis pretty active. His post-retirement career has consisted of acting alongside comedy legends like Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell, producing award-worthy documentaries, hosting celebrity basketball fundraisers for the hood, and delivering positive messaging and imagery via his Black Santa company, among other things.
Showcasing his skills off the court, the two-time NBA All-Star has seamlessly crossed over from the hardwood to Hollywood. However, that hasn’t stopped him from entertaining the thought of a comeback.
“For sure,” Davis says on tonight’s episode of Drink Champs after being asked if he could play in today’s league. “It’s more suited towards the game I could play. I can shoot. I can pass. I can drive. I can still defend. The game is also faster, so there’s a lot of moving up and down the court.”
B-Diddy believes the role of a point guard has shifted over the years, which he says could work in his favor if he decided to play professionally again. “When I played it was like I had to play the post or guard a bigger guard, and just play more than being a point guard. In today’s era, I could probably just be a point guard and be cool.”
A hot topic of debate recently has been the current state of toughness displayed by the NBA and its marquee players. Davis, who says he entered the league at the tail-end of a “where dudes was still fighting” period, compared the more aggressive style of the older era to an older brother looking to toughen his younger brother. “Everybody got elbowed, but you had to elbow back,” Davis admits. “That’s how you earned your respect.”
Davis also offered commentary on the New York Knicks’ chances of winning; what it was like playing for Donald Sterling, the controversial former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers (see above); and his grandmother’s advice on having a back-up plan.
