Last month, it was announced that Jermaine Dupri would be the recipient of the Breaking Barriers Award at this year’s Global Spin ceremony. Today, he spoke on the honor with The Breakfast Club, as well as cleared up rumors that he had reunited with former flame Janet Jackson and coined Growing up Hip Hop Atlanta his version of the Kardashians.

On being the recipient of the Breaking Barriers Awards at this year’s Global Spin Awards “It’s a huge honor, because it brings me back to my first days of wanting to be in the music business. Even before I wanted to be in the music business I wanted to be a DJ. To be honored amongst DJs, be in a room full of DJs and people I actually wanted to be around and was scared to be around is pretty exciting.”

On Janet Jackson rumors “All of that is just like speculation, I guess when somebody gets single. The fans actually want to see us back together. They’ve been championing this, but none of this is actually true. It’s actually the funniest thing in the world for me.”

“I dated Janet for damn near ten years. I don’t have to hide. Why would I hide? Why am I going to sneak around with somebody y’all know I been with? It’s not even secret. That’s the part that’s tripping me out.”

On his daughter and Bow Wow being on Growing up Hip Hop Atlanta “That’s like our version of the Kardashians. It is. It’s like all of my family. My daughter was born in hip hop. It’s a realistic show.”

On not receiving proper credit “I think that when people want to honor me they can get lost in how many songs people actually want to hear from people honoring Jermaine Dupri.”

“If you ask a fan of So So Def they are going to go on and on forever, and that’s where it kind of gets lost. Because I’m not the cookie-cutter guy that’s just like here goes five records, you can honor JD. There’s like ten other records that somebody else is going to want to hear.”
