Joey Bada$$ confirms delay of CAPITAL STEEZ's 'King Capital' album

“Due to business legalities and sample clearances.”

Back in July, Joey Bada$$ closed out the third annual STEEZ Day showcase with a special announcement. “You know its been five years and we just want to say, on December 23, King Capital will officially be dropping,” he told the crowd. “Y’all heard it here first. The most valid source.” The slated release date was set to coincide with the five-year anniversary of Capital STEEZ’s passing. On December 24, 2012, the Pro Era rapper took his own life.

Although the project has been anticipated by fans for quite some time, Joey Bada$$ announced that the long-awaited release would be delayed until further notice. Taking to Instagram last night (December 11), Joey attributed the pushback to “business legalities and sample clearances.”

Over the summer, Joey sat with REVOLT and revealed the challenges that come with finishing his late friend’s posthumous album. “The hardest part [of] working on his album is trying to make decisions for him. Trying to kind of gauge what he would want to do, how he would go about certain things. That’s probably the hardest part.”

“Just making these calculated decisions, ‘Ok, he wouldn’t want to do this because…he would want to do this because.’ And just have everybody be on the same page,” he continued. “Aside from that, man, it’s a great body of work. To be honest, another hard part about it is listening to the records. ‘Cause, you know, every time you hear his voice, it takes us back. It brings us into that mode. It be really hard, but we’ve gotten to the point where we’re past that. We just really focused on putting it out and making sure it’s delivered to the people who’ve been asking for it for a long time.”
