After last year’s move to New Orleans, the Global Spin Awards is back on road. “This year we’re doing it bigger and better. And it’s the evolution of not just the DJs, but the show itself,” said Shawn Prez, as he sat with The Breakfast Club to announce that the yearly ceremony highlighting the achievements in the DJ realm will be held for the first time in Los Angeles.

“We want to get bigger, we want to get better and we want the world to really take this thing serious. LA is where all of the major awards shows are held, so we had to take it out there,” said the GSA founder.

2018 Global Spin Awards to honor Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri and more

It was also unveiled that next year’s ceremony will see hip-hop icons Timbaland and Jermaine Dupri on the receiving end of career achievement honors. While Timbo the King will be accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award, Mr. So So Def will be honored with the Breaking Barriers Award. “Shout out to them. It’s exciting to have those two in the building, be able to really put on the screen their life’s work, and show how it stems from two turntables,” Prez told DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne tha God.

The night’s most coveted category, DJ of the Year, is full of heavyweights. The list of turntable masters gunning for the top trophy include first-time nominee Metro Boomin, DJ Khaled, Diplo, Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers and DJ Envy. A-Trak, Funkmaster Flex, DJ Drama and Steve Aoki were also announced as nominees for the 2018 Global Spin Awards.

The Global Spin Awards take place on Thursday, Feb. 15 in Los Angeles.
