Just over two weeks ago, the news of the tragic passing of Lil Peep sent a shockwave of grief over the music community, with thousands saddened and angered to learn drugs likely were suspect.

While the death of the rapper, who was only 21 at the time of his passing, is still being investigated by authorities, many gathered in London and Long Beach, New York Saturday evening (Dec. 2) to honor Peep’s life and legacy.

The memorial service in New York was live streamed and while his family, friends and fans paid tribute to him in Long Beach, his face was simultaneously being projected onto the House of Commons in London.

Both the mother and grandmother of the rapper, born Gustav Åhr, addressed those in attendance, touching on his influence, reading a couple letters from fans and thanking those in attendance for their support and for truly understanding the late musician.

“He wasn’t the modern-day Kurt Cobain, by the way,” Peep’s grandmother, Jenny Kastner, said. “He is the first and only Lil Peep, and arguably left behind a legacy that will have a far greater impact. His kindness will live on through lots of people.”

Lil Peep’s mother, Liza Womack, echoed those sentiments, next to take the stage and reflect on a conversation she had with her son Oskar after they lost Gus.

“One of the things Oskar said to me was, ‘Momma, just think of what he accomplished in barely 21 years,” Womack said. “Most people never get to do in their entire lifetime what Gus did in 21 years… Gus did it. He lived his own life on his own terms. He was a stubborn, driven, talented, crafty, observant, and tender young man. Gus was also vulnerable.”

In addition to speeches from colleagues and family members, the service also screened Good Charlotte’s tribute cover of his track, “Awful Things.”
