This week’s episode of Drink Champs features special guest The-Dream. Having penned chart-topping hit records for some of the biggest artists of the last two decades, the Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter spoke on some of the interesting stories attached to songs he’s written. One song in particular that the Love King focused on is Beyoncé’s wildly successful “Single Ladies.”
While chatting with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, The-Dream revealed some of details behind how he ended up crafting the lead single from Bey’s third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce. According to the hit-maker, it was actually JAY-Z who approached him about working with 2017’s highest-paid woman in music. “I happened to be on tour at the time. And I remember Jay coming in and he’s like “Yo I need you to go in and write with my girl,” he recalled.
The Radio Killa also explained that in some ways “Single Ladies” confirmed that hip hop’s royal couple were actually together. “What better public way to say, “Oh yeah, we’re actually together?,” asked Dream, before pointing out that Beyoncé’s wedding ring was unveiled for the first time publicly in the song’s visual. “You didn’t see the ring until the video,” he stated.
Comparing himself to an investigative reporter, The-Dream offered the reasoning behind why he considers “Singles Ladies” to be one of the least difficult songs he’s had to pen for the “Formation” singer. “What else would Beyoncé be singing about,” he asked. “She was in a relationship. Nobody knew if Jay was there. Y’all didn’t know what it was.”
