This past week, the death of Lil Peep sent a shockwave of grief and sadness over the music community, as well as sparked a conversation surrounding the harsh realities and complexities behind issues such as mental health, addiction and drug abuse, particularly with the anti-anxiety medication Xanax.

Lil Uzi Vert is among those speaking out in memory of Lil Peep and while expressing his emotions and condolences, the rapper revealed that he has begun taking steps toward his own sobriety.

“We would love 2 stop …. but do you really care cause we been on xanax all f—king year,” Uzi posted on Twitter following the news of Lil Peep’s passing, which is suspected to be due to a drug overdose. “Rip buddy, I 100% understand and I don’t fault u.”

Later on, Uzi then updated his Twitter to showcase his own struggle and story, sharing that he is taking a break from drug use in wake of the recent tragedy.

“Sober 2 day I have been shaking,” Uzi wrote. “I have been cursing my love ones out and fighting. In the studio with no thoughts in my head. Teeth biting down because I just wanna be angry at something …… maybe I will just smoke weed tonight.”

Lil Peep’s older brother, Karl Åhr, recently spoke out about his sibling’s passing, explaining to People that he believes the pill his brother took that led to his suspected overdose may have been laced.

“We [the family] have heard there was some sort of substance he did not expect to be involved in the substance he was taking.” Åhr shared, while expressing his personal belief that his brother’s death was an accident. “He thought he could take what he did, but he had been given something and he didn’t realize what it was.”

The rapper, who was 21 at the time of his death, was found dead right before a scheduled show in Tucson Thursday evening (Nov. 16). The final toxicology reports will not be available for an additional six to eight weeks.
