Earlier Tuesday morning (Nov. 14) terror broke out as a gunman opened fire at several locations in Northern California, including targeting an elementary school and a woman driving her children to school.

As reported, at least four people were killed as a result of the shooting, with ten people injured and taken to local area hospitals for treatment. Two children were among the injured.

According to Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston, police received “multiple 911 calls of multiple different shooting sites, including the elementary school.”

The shooting took place in Rancho Tehama Reserve, a small area roughly 135 miles north of Sacramento, with gunfire ringing out at seven different locations.

“It was very clear early on that we had a subject that was randomly picking targets,” Johnston added.

A semiautomatic rifle and two handguns believed to be used by the shooter were recovered from the scene.

Police fatally shot the gunman after responding to the scene. At the time of this report, the gunman has not been publicly identified, as officials are working to officially confirm the man’s name. Authorities also added that the gunman intended to shoot more children at the elementary school, but a lockdown procedure effectively saved lives.

Per reports, the suspected attacker was involved in a “domestic violence incident” a day prior to the shooting. According to the AP, a Northern California sheriff has stated that one of the victims was a woman he was previously accused of stabbing.

“[We are] saddened to hear about today’s violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren,” Gov. Jerry Brown and his wife Anne said in a statement. “We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones and unite with all Californians in grief.”

The shooting in Rancho Tehama follows recent tragedies in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, with the conversations surrounding gun control, legislative reform and why mass shootings keep happening both ongoing and seemingly at a frustrating standstill.
