Kendrick Lamar and U2 are becoming frequent collaborators, today (Nov. 1) releasing their latest track together, “Get Out of Your Own Way.”
The Irish rock legends, who appeared on Lamar’s 2017 album, DAMN., have now returned the favor, recruiting the Compton emcee for a guest appearance on their forthcoming fourteenth studio album, Songs of Experience.
During his appearance, which appears at the tail-end of the track, Lamar takes listeners to church, stating his own take on one of the most well-known portions of the Bible, the Beatitudes.
“Blessed are the arrogant / for theirs is the kingdom of their own company,” Lamar says, in a triumphant spoken word style (as opposed to rapping). “Blessed are the superstars / for the magnificence in their light we understand better our own insignificance / Blessed are the filthy rich: for you can only truly own what you give away, like your pain.”
While the song appears to cut off before he’s finished, perhaps the stylistic choice will mean Lamar may appear on a second song on the album.
Take a listen below, and keen an eye out for U2’s new album, which is slated to drop on Dec. 1.
