Macklemore, Jhené Aiko, Kevin Gates debut high on the Billboard 200

For his first solo album since 2005, Macklemore overcomes the sophomore slump (as a solo artist).

The rapper’s latest album, Gemini, debuted at the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 chart this week. With sales of 51,000 (27,000 in traditional sales), the project is now Macklemore’s highest charting solo album to date. His last album (not to be confused with his Ryan Lewis joint releases), 2005’s The Language of My World, failed to chart when it debuted 12 years ago. Right above the comeback kid are The Killers, whose fifth studio album Wonderful Wonderful reigned the sales race with 118,000 units.

Meanwhile, Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2 continues to dominate the top five, sliding to No. 3 this week with 45,000 copies sold. This is the album’s fifth week on the chart.

Another success story happens to be Kevin Gates, who is currently serving a 30-month prison sentence in Illinois. The Baton Rouge rapper scores his second top 10 effort with By Any Means 2. The album, which features unreleased material from the vault, jumped from No. 100 to No. 4 in its second week with sales of 40,000 copies. As Billboard points out, Gates’ last album, 2016’s Islah, peaked at No. 2 and went on to go platinum (with no features).

Jhené Aiko’s surprise album Trip gave the singer her third solo top 10. Released at the tail end of September, Aiko’s junior album arrived at No. 5 on the chart, selling 37,000 units.

Post Malone’s Stoney album also saw a rise, jumping from No. 10 to No. 6, following its December 2016 release. The album moved an additional 37,000 copies, just 1,000 copies over Imagine Dragons’ 36,000 forEvolve at No. 7.

Wrapping up the top 10 are Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. at No. 8 (34,000), Khalid’s American Teen at No. 9 (32,000), and Ed Sheeran’s ÷ at No. 10 (30,000).
