JAY-Z used his spotlight on Saturday Night Live last night (Sept. 30) to salute Colin Kaepernick, sporting a custom jersey in support of the still-unemployed quarterback and activist, complete with the number 7 and “Colin K.” adorned on the back.
In true Hov form, he let the music do most of the talking, performing two cuts off his latest studio album, 4:44, with Damian Marley joining him for a rendition of “Bam,” while someone in the background waved an Ethiopian flag throughout the performance.
He also performed his latest album’s title track, with many fans considering the song one of the storied emcee’s most personal tracks to date.
For the stripped-down performance on SNL‘s 43rd season opener, JAY-Z wore a white t-shirt and stood alone on stage under dim lights, with the intimate and vulnerable moment feeling especially up close and personal, powerful and rare.
Well done, JAY-Z, well done.
