Dave Chappelle has officially been awarded the key to Washington D.C.

As reported, the legendary comedian was given the Key to the City earlier today (Sept. 29), with Mayor Muriel Bowser recognizing the 44-year-old in a ceremony taking place at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, the very school Chappelle graduated from back in 1991.

“Some very special native Washingtonians have dedicated their lives to making Washington, D.C. better, and they’ve gone above and beyond to show others what makes the nation’s capital the best city in the world,” Bowser stated, speaking highly of the entertainer. “Dave Chappelle reminds us what it means to live a life filled with purpose, meaning, and laughter.”

As reported, Chappelle also donated his first Emmy award to the school during the recognition ceremony, as well as shared some sage advice with its current students. At the time of the awards earlier this year, he advocated for the rebuilding of the public school system in D.C., with the hashtag #DCPublicSchools promptly trending as a result.

“Success is your choice,” the comedian said. “Your high school friends will be friends for life. I wanted to be a comedian. So I knew I needed to learn acting. I used to mop the stage.”
