It’s been 73 years since the Museum of Modern Art in New York deemed it fit to hold a fashion-oriented exhibition. Yet in the last century, both the fashion industry and our cultural interactions with style have changed dramatically enough to warrant a new retrospective.

MoMA’s “Is Fashion Modern?” exhibition unpacks 110 years of history through the lens of the clothing items and accessories that have defined watershed moments in culture. From the ubiquitious Little Black Dress to Levis and the rise of blue collar fashion, there’s a lot to be digested.

However one installation that shouldn’t be missed is that of iconic Harlem tailor, Dapper Dan, whose one-of-a-kind alterations became a pinnacle of hip-hop culture in the ’80s and ’90s. At first rejected by luxury labels, Dan’s story has come full circle: He’s currently the face of Gucci’s latest campaign and will be re-opening his Harlem store with funding from the brand.
