This weekend, essentially every conversation has centered around Donald Trump’s disgusting verbal attack against the NFL and the NBA, with celebrities such as Sean “Diddy” Combs taking to social media to share words of encouragement and support directed at the heroes that make up our professional athletic leagues.
As the conversations and outrage continue, Stevie Wonder is among those making his position on the matter clear, choosing to “take a knee for America” during his performance at the 2017 Global Citizen Festival in New York City.
Saturday evening (Sept. 23) the living legend paused during his headlining set to address the crowd, with his son Kwame Morris joining him.
“Tonight I’m taking a knee for America, but not just one knee… I’m taking both knees,” Wonder says, kneeling as the crowd loudly erupts in cheers. “Both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, our leaders of the world, and I quote ‘Amen.’ I wanted to say that prayer before I serve you my musical meal.”
Wonder’s action immediately was applauded, with the iconic singer’s heartfelt prayer felt by those at the festival and those tuning in online alike.
