SZA has been experiencing such a wave of formidable success and far-reaching fandom since releasing her debut album Ctrl that it feels nearly impossible to recall her as being anything less than stellar. But, according to the singer, those moments did once exist.

In fact, she’ll be the first to say she was unsure of her own artistry. Earlier this year, five months before dropping the applauded effort, she admitted she once found her own voice “boring” and absent of “emotional moments.”

Now, she’s revealed to DJ Semtex during an interview on BBC Radio 1XTRA that none other than JAY-Z also doubted her longevity, saying:

“JAY-Z was the first person to tell me that he thought I was a fluke, to my face. He was just like, ‘You’re really good, you’re pretty good,’ and I was like ‘Thanks.’ He said, ‘I thought you were a fluke,’ and I was like, ‘Me too!’ I absolutely think he meant it and that’s okay. I think I am every other day. I think we all do…I question how I got into this mess all the time.”

Well, we’re glad to see that SZA stepped out of her shell enough to prove both JAY and herself wrong. *Plays “Supermodel.”*
