Bernie Casey, a standout NFL wide receiver-turned-actor, has passed away, according to the Hollywood Reporter. He was 78.

Casey, who appeared in celebrated films such as Revenge of the Nerds, Never Say Never Again, Boxcar Bertha, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Brothers and more, died Tuesday (Sept. 19) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. According to his representative, the actor passed away after suffering a brief illness.

During his career as an athlete, Casey earned All-American recognition in track and field while attending Bowling Green State University, later making a trip to the finals at the 1960 U.S. Olympic Trials. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers a year later in 1961, going on to play six NFL seasons with the 49ers and two with the Los Angeles Rams.

He made his debut as an actor in 1969, appearing in the film Guns of the Magnificent Seven, a sequel to The Magnificent Seven. Throughout his storied and lengthy career, he appeared in a vast array of films, as well as made several notable forays into television, such as with the series Harris and Company.

In addition to his achievements as an athlete and an actor, Casey was also a published author, poet, painter and an inspiration to many. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his loved ones.
