EPMD talks to 'Drink Champs' about Drake and others sampling their music

New York City was shrouded in Hip-Hop on Sunday. In Queens, the Meadows Festival featured the likes of Nas, Ghostface Killah and Action Bronson on its final day. Several boroughs away in Manhattan, a concert featured Onyx, M.O.P. and Group Home. And in Brooklyn at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island as part of NYC’s “Summer Stage” initiative, an audience was treated to classics while seeing Slick Rick, Black Moon, Smiff-N-Wessun, and EPMD.

Headliners Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith, wearing all black, came out and shook the venue with timeless smashes such as “So Wat Cha Sayin’,” “Gold Digger” and “You’re A Customer.”

On the next episode of “Drink Champs,” the Brentwood, Long Island natives spoke to N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN about the influence of their catalog.

“E and I are the most sampled dudes in hip hop. From all our beats if you do the history,” Smith said.

“Beat for beat,” Sermon added.

One of their most used records is definitely “You’re A Customer.” Zhane (“Sending My Love”), Mario Winans (“I Don’t Wanna Know”), and Tha Dogg Pound (“New York, New York”) are just a small portion of artists who have sampled the song from their 1988 album Strictly Business. Diddy used the beat several times for the likes of Biggie and The Lox (“You’ll See,”) Faith Evans (“I Remember” remix) Jodeci (“Come and Talk To Me,”) and most recently himself for “Whatcha Gon’ Do?” Diddy’s son King Combs put out a video last week with him rapping over the absorbing soundscape.

“From Mario Winans’ ‘I Don’t Wanna Know,’ I know I made a hundred grand,” Sermon shared. “And Jodeci’s is ‘Come and Talk To Me.’ Drake just used it.”

EPMD ended their Brooklyn concert with a heated flurry of “Music,” “The Crossover” and “The Headbanger.”

Besides their sampling, the duo talks about close friend LL Cool J throwing subliminal disses at them, and some back-in-day misunderstandings they had with another comrade, Rakim, that could have turned physical. Watch the full episode at 10 p.m. on Thursday on Revolt TV.
