On Sunday (September 17) the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, CA. Donald Glover and Lena Waithe were two of the night’s big winners, both bringing home their first Emmy Awards and making history while doing so.

Donald Glover won his first Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series with the “B.A.N.” episode of Atlanta. This win made Glover the first black director in history to win in the category. Donald Glover was nominated in two other categories as well, one of which being Best Lead Actor In A Comedy, which he also won, becoming the second African American actor to win this award since Robert Guillaume in 1985.

Master of None writer and actress Lena Waithe also took home her first Emmy, winning Best Writing For A Comedy Series alongside her co-star and co-writer Aziz Ansari for the series’ “Thanksgiving” episode. The Emmy win makes Waithe the first African American woman to win an Emmy in this category. Lena Waithe thanked Aziz, her mother, and the entire LGBTQIA community for her win.

“And to everybody out there who showed us so much love with this episode,” she concluded, “thank you for embracing a little Indian boy from South Carolina and a little queer black girl from the South Side of Chicago. We appreciate it more than you could ever know.”
