Black girl magic strikes again! Issa Rae can now officially call herself an “easy, breezy, beautiful” CoverGirl.
The writer, actress, and creator of HBO’s hit series Insecure took to Instagram today (Sept. 12) to announce she will be the newest face of CoverGirl.
In an emotional post, Issa writes, “I remember being an awkward black girl in high school, reading the pages of my favorite magazines, casually flipping through @COVERGIRL ads, singing their slogan in my head,” Rae writes. “Never EVER in my life did I imagine I’d be one. I am SO honored and SO excited for what’s to come.”
CoverGirl also took to Instagram to confirm their partnership and welcome Issa with open arms.
“YES, you better believe it beautiful, the secret is out and we couldn’t be happier!” CoverGirl wrote.
Issa spoke in more detail in a press release for the announcement.
“My character is ever-evolving, and makeup is a tool to help transform my persona — whether for a role I play in content that I produce, or the different roles I take on in my life,” Issa stated. “Becoming a COVERGIRL means a lot because the brand recognizes just how important it is for people to embrace their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways. This has been a major part of my personal journey, and a message that I want to share with others.”
HBO aired the season finale of Insecure this past Sunday (Sept. 10), and in August announced that the show will be returning for a third season.
Issa is not the first actress of color to team up with CoverGirl. Brandy and Zendaya have also partnered with the drugstore beauty brand in the past. Queen Latifah is also an official spokesman for the brand and has her own line of beauty products called the Queen Collection.
From Rihanna dropping her Fenty Beauty line to this recent announcement, this week is shaping up to be a great week for black women in the beauty industry.
