Lil Uzi Vert has no qualms about expressing his love for serial suburban mom agitator Marilyn Manson. In a 2016 interview with Nardwuar, Uzi even went so far as to call Manson “the pale emperor,” before saying he would willingly die for the rockstar. And truthfully, one only has to look at Uzi’s body of work, his approach to fashion and his supremely intense stage presence to see the rock influences. So much so, his insanely popular single, “XO TOUR Llif3” is nestled under the alternative rock category on Soundcloud.
In April, the Luv Is Rage 2 rapper took things a step further when he commissioned celebrity jeweler Ben Baller to create a $100,000 Manson pendant inspired by a 2015 Paper magazine cover, where Manson appears sporting Mickey Mouse ears. The piece features 55 carats worth of black and white diamonds with an additional 100 carats in the connected biker chain. And that’s only the surface of Uzi’s Manson adulation. His sartorial preferences, which have seen him alternately celebrated and mocked, take cues from Manson, Iggy Pop and a slew of other infamous shock rockers.
The love seems to be returned, too. Yesterday Manson took to Twitter to give the Philly-born chart topper the official seal of approval. Perhaps it’s the beginning of a beautiful, dark, twisted friendship?
Take a look below to see some of Uzi’s most Mason-esque fashion statements…
Uzi’s distressed sweater from Faith Connexion’s women’s line sparked debate about expressions of masculinity and the policing of gender norms in hip-hop. Yet, like Manson, who has been known to dabble in womenswear as well, Uzi didn’t care. “You know what it is? They’ve never felt these fabrics before,” the rapper said of critics.
It really doesn’t get more Manson then this moment for Fader‘s February cover, which Uzi ironically captioned “Dad & I.”
In a moment that no doubt made the rest of Uzi’s year, he and Manson pose in variations of plaid.
Back in January, Uzi posed with then-girlfriend Brittany Byrd and paid homage to his “dad” by sporting and OG rockstar accessory – the band tee.
Inspired by the perennially black-attired Manson, Uzi’s Metallica band tee, leather jacket with pins and skull cap with convenient allusions to hell are just the kind of outfit his “father” would wear on a casual day out.
Uzi’s Manson-inspired tee once again makes an appearance, this time with A$AP Rocky and A$AP Illz also making cameos.
Layered belts and crowd worship – does it get more Manson or rockstar?
