As one of the leading nominees at the 2017 Video Music Awards, Kendrick Lamar held court as the night’s opening performer.

Taking full reign of the night’s coveted slot, Kung Fu Kenny explored the full meaning of his signature moniker, bringing the martial arts theme to the stage as he appeared decked in an all-red attire to perform the explosive cuts “DNA.” and “HUMBLE.” Channeling the fire from those selected DAMN. cuts, Kendrick delivered a back-to-back gut-punch as flames and sword-wielding choreographers filled the background.

K. Dot is up for eight awards tonight (August 27), including categories for Artist of The Year and Best Hip Hop, along with Best Cinematography and Video of the Year for the visuals of his lead single “HUMBLE.”

Award nominations aside, the reactions to Kendrick’s fiery set were a highlight in itself.
