Lil Uzi Vert's new album mirrors his multifaceted personality

After what’s felt like a lifetime, Philadephia artist Lil Uzi Vert has finally dropped his debut studio album Luv Is Rage 2. Celebrating the massive success of his hit “XO TOUR Llif3,” which peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, Uzi’s nine months of teasing fans has finally been put to a halt.

After French website Masilia leaked a tracklist and imagery from what appeared to be the debut project, fans immediately began to speculate that Uzi was on the brink of dropping the album sooner than later. For fans who guessed right, I’m sure they are now beyond ecstatic.

The official artwork features a photo of Uzi surrounded by hand-drawn designs and strips of tape from Virgil Abloh’s Off-White fashion label.

Now let’s get into this album. It’s quite clear that Uzi has a unique, distinct sound but, more than that, throughout the LP he displays his artistic freedom, the freedom to not stick to one melody or sound. The way Uzi approaches each track uncovers his originality and gives proof as to why he does not consider himself solely a rapper. He jumps from spitting hard-hitting verses to singing his way from beginning to end under an Auto-Tuned filter (as is utilized on catchy opener “Two”).

On “The Way Life Goes,” a personal favorite, Uzi shows off his vulnerable side and possibly alludes to a past heartbreak when repeating the phrase, “I know it hurts, you’ll get over it.” On “Unfazed,” which features the Weeknd (one of only two guests on the LP, the other being Pharrell), Abel’s vocal skills and sexy melody are mixed with Uzi’s quick bars. And on “Dark Queen,” Uzi expresses that despite now having money and jewelry, making his mother proud is all that matters. But it’s “Sauce It Up” that most similarly resembles “XO TOUR Llif3” and has the best chance of going straight to the top of the charts.

Luv Is Rage 2 successfully reveals Uzi’s unmatched eclectic persona and musical style, so while Uzi may have been in the category of “Soundcloud Rappers,” this LP proves he is living in the future of rap.
