Let’s face it, some of the best money is money you don’t have to lift a finger to collect. And Wyclef Jean is in a space where many of his hit records have stood the test of time and are now considered classics worthy of sampling.

JAY-Z took a piece of The Fugees’ “Fu-Gee-La” for his 4:44 LP and, even more popularly, DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts” was built by flipping the beat of Carlos Santana’s “Maria, Maria,” a song Wyclef produced 17 years ago.

‘Clef is the next guest on Drink Champs and he told hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN about helping Khaled get the business side of “Wild Thoughts” done.

“So Khaled, I go back with Khaled,” said Clef. (The DJ made a cameo in the 2002 cult classic film Shottas playing a goon who worked for Clef’s character.) “It’s like brother to brother….I get a call from my brother Khaled and he’s like, ‘Clef, you don’t understand, this is gonna be the biggest one. We need to get Santana to clear it on his part.’ Santana is like my godfather, so Santana cleared it.”

After five weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, “Wild Thoughts,” which features Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, has been holding steady at number two the last couple weeks.

“This is what I like most about it,” Clef detailed with a smile. “When I did ‘Killing Me Softly’ with the Fugees, a reality struck me after I did that record. The record blew up like crazy. After the record blew up I was like, ‘We just made somebody a gazillion dollars of publishing.’ It’s a beautiful thing to be in 2017 and hear the new generation sampling either the Fugees or music by Wyclef.”

Wyclef also discusses being the man in Shakira’s dream, Eminem’s early days in New Jersey, and LL Cool J and Canibus’ beef.

Drink Champs with Wyclef airs this Thursday at 10 PM EST.
