After coming under fire for comments about Philadelphia women a recent episode of REVOLT TV’s “Drink Champs,” Amber Rose has spoken out to respond to the backlash.

While chopping it up with N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Rose spoke about how she always felt out of place in Philly because “a lot of the people where I’m from aren’t traditionally attractive people.” She continued to say that to grow up in Philadelphia as a beautiful woman was “a blessing and a curse” and that it was “very difficult for me.”

Rose’s comments sparked multiple lines of criticism on Twitter. Some said that she is detracting from her feminist initiatives like the Slutwalk by putting down other women, while others said that her comments perpetuated issues of colorism. Many users also flatly disagreed with Rose’s assertion, saying that Philadelphia does indeed have beautiful women – including celebrities like Jill Scott, Eve, Phyllis Hyman and the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC.

Rose apologized for her comments in a lengthy Instagram story, admitting that she was “cringing” while looking back at what she said.

“Unfortunately, it’s not easy doing interviews and always saying things the way you really want to articulate. In the interview, I said that where I was from, people weren’t traditionally attractive, and I was. I wasn’t saying that’s how I felt, I was saying that’s how people treated me. It didn’t come off properly in the interview,” Rose said. “I just watched a clip, and I’m just cringing because I’m not that girl.

“Sometimes, when you articulate yourself, you just fuck it up,” she added. “I think everyone is absolutely gorgeous and beautiful in their own way, and I am about body positivity and loving yourself.”
