Mere months after the death of Prodigy, hip-hop has lost another pioneer. Fresh Kid Ice, a founding member of Miami rap legends 2 Live Crew, died on Thursday (July 13) at 7:50 a.m., according to TMZ. His manager says he died of a medical condition.

Fresh Kid Ice, born Chris Wong Won, was a member of 2 Live Crew, the Miami bass rap group who was prominent in the 1980s and early 1990s. 2 Live Crew – which consisted of Luther Campbell, Fresh Kid Ice, DJ Mr. Mixx, and Amazing Vee – was one of the most controversial acts of their time.

With songs like “Me So Horny” and “The Fuck Shop,” their album As Nasty As They Wanna Be horrified critics around the country because of how sexually graphic it was. Along with selling 2 million copies, the album was the first ever to be deemed legally obscene by the United States government. Fresh Kid Ice was a pioneer for other Asian rappers, and the only member of the group to appear on every album.

Co-founder Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell and fellow Miami rap luminary Rick Ross both praised Fresh Kid Ice on social media.
