With the Tupac Shakur biopic in theaters, all the reviews are beginning to pour in. Earlier today (June 16), Jada Pinkett Smith called out the picture for its “deeply hurtful” portrayal of her friendship with subject of the biopic and last week, Young Noble and E.D.I. Mean of the Outlawz described it as “dope” and expressed excitement in the public finally seeing it. If that wasn’t enough, 50 Cent hopped on Instagram and gave the film its most scathing review yet. Still, despite the mixed reactions, the film has been highly anticipated for quite some time — just ask John Singleton.

As reported, Singleton was originally tapped to direct the film, but later left the production due to creative differences. During his appearance on Drink Champs this week, the director shied from speaking on the film, but did mention why he decided to walk away. “The people that got the rights to do the movie had different ideas on how to do the movie than I did,” he stated. “Let em make their movie and lets see how it does.”

“Let the movie come out and y’all make y’all judgement and what you want to say about it,” he expressed.

Back in April, Young Noble of the Outlawz issued out an open letter about the speculation surrounding the film and Singleton’s involvement. According to Noble, the director was fired after the studio learned of his plans to include a scene of 2Pac getting raped in jail and Afeni Shakur engaging in “lesbian activities.”

“John wrote his own script for the movie an in his script he had a scene insinuating 2pac getting raped in jail an he had Afeni as a lesbian an wanted a scene in there with her doing some lesbian activities,” Noble wrote on Instagram. “So this dude John Singleton was gonna put all kinda lies an made up shit an give y’all some real Hollywood movie so he got fired on the spot an now he out here doing interviews saying he quit like he was doing something out of honor for Pac & Afeni.”

In his interview with Drink Champs, Singleton confirmed his original plans for the film, stating, “There’s a whole lot of things that they will not have in the movie that actually happened.”

All in all, Singleton hopes to one day be able to get his vision on the screen. “They made the movie they wanted to make and hopefully one day I get to tell that story,” he revealed. “There’s so many different things as to who he was as a person and why you can be inspired by him.”
