It’s easy to forget, considering all that Drake has achieved since he debuted a decade ago, that a major highlight from his first album Thank Me Later has always been the Dream-assisted cut “Shut It Down.”

And if you, like us, have been wondering why the two haven’t crossed paths again despite their proven ability to make good music together, the singer-producer explained as much during a recent interview with Genius.

Reflecting on their first and only collaboration, The-Dream remembers persistence from Drake and his team, despite issues with timing, saying:

“I remember when Drake was putting this record together, I was getting calls, after calls, after calls, like, ‘Yo, get on this record, get on this record, like, yo, get on this record.’ And I said, ‘I’ma do the record, man, I’m on tour, like, I’ma do the record as soon as I get to a place, I’ma do it.’”

Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and what it did for the careers of everyone involved

The-Dream then hinted at a difference of opinion between the two artists regarding the sound of the track, saying:

“Then Drake called, like, ‘Yo, this is how I want it to sound.’ I’m like, ‘Drake, I’ma do this record how I’M gonna do it. I’m gonna give it back to you the same way you sent it with your verse on it, like, I’ma send it back to you.’ He said, ‘Okay, cool, no problem.’”

But The-Dream confirmed, “The record came out great.”

Still, here’s where things seem to go south.

“I think when the next album came along…I asked him to get on a record and he never got on,” The-Dream explained. “And so, I’m only gonna ask you once, especially if I’ve already done something for you…so that’s the end of the Drake and Dream era of a record.”

And there you have it.
