The Get Down, Baz Luhrmman’s Netflix series based on the early years of hip-hop, has been canceled, according to a report by Deadline.

The show was based in the South Bronx in the 1970s, and told the story of a poet, an aspiring singer, and a graffiti writer-turned-DJ – a crew of teenagers called “The Get Down Brothers” – chasing their dreams to be a part of the rising culture of hip-hop. The show told a fictionalized story, but certainly had its hip-hop stamps of authenticity. Pioneers Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash were both portrayed as characters; Nas was an executive producer, and a vocal narrator; hip-hop journalist Nelson George was a supervising producer; and the likes of Flash, Herc, hip-hop dance pioneer Willie “Marine Boy” Estrada and grafitti legends John “Crash” Matos and Chris “Daze” Ellis were all involved, according to Complex. The show was reportedly the most expensive show on Netflix, ever, with a budget of $120 million.

The opening six-part pilot was released in August 2016, and the remaining five episodes of the first season were just released in early April 2017.

When news of the show’s cancellation surfaced, Luhrmman released a lengthy statement on his Facebook page. He said that the show was “unlikely” to go back into production, and explained that to make the show, he would have to defer directing a film for two years.

Dear fans of The Get Down,

I wanted to speak to you with an open heart and just acknowledge how humbled and moved that…

“It kills me that I can’t split myself into two and make myself available to both productions,” he wrote. “…The simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life.”

Luhrmman also shouted out Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, Kurtis Blow, Harheim, Nas, and “all the b-boys, b-girls, graffiti-writers, Mc’s and DJ’s that made this story possible.”

“All of us in The Get Down family have been touched by this precious mission of telling the pre-history of a form of culture that would go on to change not only the city, but the world,” he said.

Season one of The Get Down is still available to view on Netflix.
