Notorious B.I.G. would have turned 45 today (May 21), so it’s only right that the Billboard Music Awards would pay homage to a mainstay on the charts. And his friend and music partner, Sean “Diddy” Combs, did exactly that.

The REVOLT TV chairman made a surprise appearance at the awards, sharing words about the musical and cultural accomplishments of Biggie, and his role in making Bad Boy Records one of the most successful music companies ever.

“BIG sold over 25 million records worldwide. His Ready To Die album, his Life After Death album, classics. They changed the game of hip-hop forever. Biggie was the best rapper I ever had a chance to work with.”

Diddy then introduced attendees to some of Biggie’s family. First, he presented a clip from 20 years ago, where he presented Biggie’s mother Voletta Wallace with a Billboard Music Award. Then, he introduced Diddy then introduced Notorious B.I.G.’s son, fledgling musician and actor CJ Wallace.

“I know my father is looking down on us tonight, with all of his love and support,” he said. “My sister and i will continue to carry on his name with tremendous pride, and live my life with his words.”

After young Wallace shared a few words, Combs shared a trailer for Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A Bad Boy Story, the upcoming documentary that tells the story of Bad Boy Records and shows how the last year’s Bad Boy reunion show and tour came together. The documentary will be available on Apple Music on June 25.
