Controversial Sheriff David Clarke has announced that he will leave his post as Milwaukee’s top cop and head to D.C. to work in the Trump administration, an assistant secretary in the Department Of Homeland Security’s Partnership and Engagement office.

Clarke has been a vocal Trump supporter and critic of the Black Lives Matter movement, calling it “Black LIES Matter.”, memorably tussling with Don Lemon on the topic, and about the spate of recent police shootings. Clarke was one of the few African Americans to speak at the 2016 Republican National Convention, where he offered a fiery speech and offered the applause line “Blue Lives Matter.” At February’s Conservative Political Action Conference, Clarke offered support for Trump’s executive orders on immigration. He is also a vocal supporter of Trump’s proposals on the Mexican border wall.

Controversy surrounds Clarke in his home city, too. The sheriff has come under fire for the mistreatment and death of several inmates in the Milwaukee County Jail. (A grand jury has recommended criminal charges against officers in one such case, concerning the dehydration death of inmate Terrill Thomas.)

“I’m both honored and humbled to be appointed to this position by Secretary Kelly, working for the Trump administration,” he said during an interview with conservative radio host Vicki McKenna earlier today.

The Department Of Homeland Security has yet to confirm the announcement, offering only this tweet:
