Music festival season is upon us and artists from all genres will be taking jaunts around the globe the next few months. If you live in New York, you don’t have to travel any further than the five boroughs to see over 100 artists for free during the warm weather months.
New York City Parks Foundation announced their annual SummerStage 2017 season. Among the highlights are the 40th anniversary of the pioneering hip-hop godfathers, the Rock Steady Crew. There’s also a reunion of “Def Poetry Jam” which is curated by Russell Simmons and Mos Def; George Clinton is bringing back Parliament Funkadelic; the cast of the Broadway musical A Bronx Tale will perform excerpts from the play; and legendary MCs Jadakiss, Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA, KRS-One, Capone-N-Noreaga, Slick Rick, and Jim Jones all have separate shows.
Also on hand will be timeless singer Mavis Staples who can currently be found alongside the Gorillaz and Pusha T on the new song “Let Me Out.” She has a free show on June 3 at Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield.
“City Parks Foundation is dedicated to providing every New Yorker with access to excellent, culturally relevant performing arts experiences in their home communities,” said Heather Lubov, Executive Director of City Parks Foundation in a statement released to REVOLT TV. “Our SummerStage festival brings outstanding artists from genres across the globe directly to city parks across the five boroughs, all free of charge, making those parks community and cultural centers.”
“This year’s line-up brings together a widely diverse mix that is representative of the cultural mosaic that is New York City, a line-up that pays homage to both the cultural legacy of the city and its communities while celebrating what’s next,” added Erika Elliott, Executive Artistic Director of City Parks Foundation.
The Summerstage season kicks off May 17 and runs until September 28.
