The space for gender norm-defying fashion is growing.

Last year, we saw Jaden Smith become the face of Louis Vuitton’s womenswear campaign and Young Thug declare that “there’s no such thing as gender” for Calvin Klein.

Now, Pharrell has become the first man to ever star in a Chanel bag campaign.

In a short promotional film (see farther below), the super-producer can be seen treating the backstage area of a concert venue like his own personal playground. He rides rolling equipment cases and climbs scaffolds to later walk them like a tightrope, all the while keeping his Gabrielle bag by his side.

Of the bag, Chanel couturier Karl Lagerfeld told WWD, it can be worn in “many different circumstances” and that “it’s not very feminine in the sense of being chichi.” He noted that virtual reality goggles inspired the shape of the bag, as well.

When interviewed after the Chanel Ready-to-Wear Fall 2017 show, Pharrell said, “When I first started wearing it I didn’t have anything in it. I was just so excited to have it. But now I use it to carry my phone, and — you know — essential personal things. I wore it yesterday. But, you know, I’m shy about it, but I’m grateful.”
