Fans have asked Dame Dash about the ins and outs of the Roc-A-Fella dynasty for years, and the label’s co-founder said that he’s currently preparing to tell the story in his own way.

In the latest installment of his Hip-Hop Motivation video series, Dash said he is currently developing a film that tells the story of the label.

“The movie I make isn’t going to be what everyone is expecting. There’s a lot that people didn’t see, and that would be the part that I’d be showing,” Dash said. “… I want to attack it in a way that no one would attack it.”

“There were so many different things that happened at Roc-a-Fella,” he continued. “So many different stories to tell. Every artist was a movie within itself: there’s Dipset, there’s State Property, there’s Jay, there’s Kanye, there’s everyone else, there’s the R&B part of it.”

Roc-A-Fella ran hip-hop in the late 1990s and early 2000s by launching or building upon the careers of artists and producers like co-founder Jay Z, Kanye West, Cam’ron, Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Just Blaze and others. Dash and Jay Z also trailblazed in other areas of hip-hop entrepreneurship, starting clothing, alcohol and film companies.

Minutes after sharing details about the Roc-A-Fella film, Dash expressed an eagerness to move on from what many people consider his golden days.

“I had already left Roc-A-Fella before the big [public breakup]. I had quit, I just didn’t make a big announcement,” Dash said. “… No one could believe it. I didn’t feel like doing it no more.

“I’m so into what I’m doing now, even though what we did before was impactful, sometimes I don’t feel like reliving it all day,” Dash said.
