Mason Parker is a modern-day renaissance man, and the buzz around the Queen City artist continues to grow. A versatile versifier, Mason recently dropped the “Quill” moniker and he’s ready to extend his talents into every aspect the arts have to offer.

As a lyricist, Mason was named Charlotte’s Best Rapper of the Year in 2013 by Creative Loafing Magazine and 2016 Queen City Awards’ Male Hip-Hop Artist of the Year. Under the name “Quill,” Mason released several mixtapes including Loose Leaf Vol. 1 and Loose Leaf Vol. 2 featuring 3-time Emmy Award-winning poet Bluz. His single “So Sorry Momma,” one of many showcasing the true depth of Mason’s message, was featured on Talib Kweli’s Community Mixtape as well as on Kweli’s 2010 “Gutter Rainbows” Tour.

For more than a year, Charlotte could find Mason hosting the overnight shift on WPEG Power 98FM, Charlotte’s largest urban contemporary station. Mason’s appearance at the BET Music Matter showcase at the Legendary SOB’s in New York City helped catapult him to being one of Charlotte’s most sought-after artists. This past Christmas, as Master of Ceremonies, Mason hosted and performed in front of the sold-out crowd attending the Hip -op Nutcracker at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, later filming his debut album FREE Mason‘s single “#StillDreamin” with the show’s dancers. In early 2017, Mason released what would be his final mixtape as an unsigned artist, Versed: The Mixtape. He has since signed to the EightyNineTen Music (8910Music) record label.

Get to know Mason in his own words:

My sound in five words or less: Distinct. Raw. Honest. Soulful. Dope.

Best part of making this video: Totally organic and completely unrehearsed, it was one of the dancers’ idea to do the video in the first place. We shot it in one continuous take using 15 extra minutes we had for onstage warm-ups prior to that night’s show. An unbelievably dope experience.

What inspires your art: There is art in everything. If you are true to your story it will tell itself.

Explain the concept of the song in one sentence: This song is for anyone that has ever wanted something so bad, for reasons so much bigger than yourself, that the thought of not accomplishing that thing makes you crumble inside.
