With the Netflix premiere of season two of “The Get Down,” created by Baz Lurhmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis, the man dabbling between the weighty roles of co-producer and musical producer, Nas, has himself a perfect platform to prep the one thing fans have been patiently waiting for.

Since 2014, the year he took a well-deserved victory lap for the 20th anniversary Illmatic, Esco has been teasing the work on his follow-up to 2012’s Life is Good. In 2015, he released the first single from the album, “The Season,” which was basically a freestyle over the instrumental of J Dilla’s “Gobstopper.” There was also work completed with Timbaland, who produced a collaboration featuring Jay Z and Justin Timberlake, titled “Sinatra In The Sands.” But for the latest update on the album, the Queensbridge legend himself points to the musical drama “The Get Down” as a creative component to his hotly-anticipatated 12th studio album.

In a sit-down with Andre Harrell for REVOLT’s “Music Talks” series, Esco delivered a few gems about the new album and noted how “The Get Down” is part of the “glue” to the release.

Nas hints at direction of new album, teases 2016 release

“My album — you got to think about [me] getting involved with “The Get Down,” going into stories of the ’70s — 1970 in The Bronx opened my head up to different things,” he shared. “So to put that record together and have what I’m feeling from my experience of working on “The Get Down,” [and] what I’ve been learning, and combine that with the way I hear music today, as soon as we mold that thing perfectly together and put the special glue in there, we’re going to give it to whoever wants to hear it.”

Although he mentioned this “glue” arriving in 2016, the recent return of “The Get Down” may also signal the return of Escobar Season. We hope.
