5 things we learned from the Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj beef

  /  04.06.2017

The last few weeks in hip-hop have been quite entertaining thanks to the ignited beef between rappers Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma, and its aftermath. While things have since simmered down, there are a few lessons we all can learn from their. Here are five things we learned from their showdown.

Everyone needs a little publicity. It likely wasn’t a coincidence that Remy Ma dropped the jaw-dropping diss record “ShETHER” just a week after the release of her collaborative album with Fat Joe, Plata O Plomo. With everyone putting their two cents in on the track, it brought attention to Remy’s latest project, as well as income to the rapper because she was able to perform the record as fans were able to stream it. For Nicki Minaj, she hadn’t been in the public eye much following her breakup with Meek Mill and this beef only helped bring attention to her and her music again.

Pick your battles wisely. When Remy came for Nicki, she unquestionably did her research on Nicki’s “scandalous” ways. Remy called her out for having a fake ass, claimed she had sex with many industry people, and even went as far as to call Nicki’s brother a pedophile. Moral of the story: if you’re going to come for someone, make sure you have enough info on them to air them out in which Remy Ma indeed did.

You don’t have to respond every time someone says something negative about you. Even though Nicki did respond (though not right away), it didn’t really add value or raise the stakes to the situation. Remy had already been crowned the winner due to the overwhelmingly positive response “ShETHER” received, as well as for how long Nicki took to retaliate. In this case, maybe silence was maybe the best choice.

There’s room at the top for everybody. While some have dubbed Nicki the Queen of Rap and others Remy Ma, either way we look at it, both female rappers have worked hard to get where they are today and it wouldn’t hurt for both to be reigning at the top.

Don’t let your emotions get the best of you. Of course female rappers, especially in this male-dominated industry, have to work twice as hard to get recognized. But sometimes not every jab you receive deserves a reaction. When Remy heard Nicki’s shots about her album sales, she got in her feelings and decided to clap back. But did she look more like an MC or a hater? Despite your opinion, sometimes it’s important to not let our emotions get the best of us because, in the end, we may want to take back what happened when we did. Remy Ma even said herself in an interview that she’s no longer particularly proud of the situation and would have rather used that energy to work together.
