Chance the Rapper has long been heralded as an independent artist after having released his three mixtapes—10 Day, Acid Rap, and Coloring Book—without the backing of a label and as free, digital downloads. Well, at least the first two.
Questions arose when, last year, Coloring Book was released as an Apple Music exclusive for two weeks before being available on other services. Chance has mostly kept quiet about the deal until now. He took to Twitter today (March 17) to explain himself after feeling as if folks were trying to “discredit” him.
Simply put, he needed the money, the Apple crew are “good people,” and after the two weeks, the mixtape was uploaded to SoundCloud, where his other two albums still remain, for free. And he himself still remains unsigned.
There you have it.
